Curriculum Intent

At Fix-It (UK), we aim to deliver a curriculum to learners that will improve their life chances and enhance their career prospects so that they can develop their own pathway into further education, training or employment.

Fix-It (UK) offers a purpose-built, unique and stimulating learning environment that has the appearance of a real-life workshop, whilst also providing the necessary classroom based learning environment that is calm, safe and inclusive to meet the needs of all its learners.

Fix-It (UK)’s unique education package provides learners with the valuable skills and essential knowledge to enhance their employability and promote independence. The curriculum also aims to develop learners into confident, well rounded people with high self-esteem, who are ready to take their next steps into society and employment.

Following initial, baseline assessments, all Fix-It (UK) learner to study an industry recognised, vocational motor vehicle course, alongside Functional Skills in Maths and English, dependent on prior knowledge and attainment. Learners will also receive tuition in Skills for Further Learning and Employment (SFLE), which provides them with the opportunity to explore themes of health and wellbeing, relationships and careers information, education, advice and guidance (CIEAG).

Alongside the academic courses offered at Fix-It (UK), learners will engage in regular, weekly 1:1 or group interventions with the learner services team, who provide additional support for personal, emotional and social development and future prospects.

Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle Studies

This qualification offers a flexible bank of units that provides an overview of potential occupations and job roles within the sector. It provides learners with specialist and transferable skills, engages them with current industry practice, and prepares them to progress onto further qualifications or employment within the motor vehicle industry.

The Skills & Education Group Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle Studies course requires learners to complete 1 mandatory unit and 2 optional units, tailored by course tutors to meet the needs of the learners.

Skills & Education Group Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle Studies

  • Health and Safety for Motor Vehicle Studies
    Unit ref: H/501/7005

    Summary
    In this mandatory unit, learners will explore the responsibilities of the employer and employee, along with the requirements of basic health and safety legislation. They will identify workshop hazards and basic safety procedures.

Optional Units:

  • Introduction to Spark Ignition Power Units
    Unit ref: T/501/7011

    Summary
    In this unit, the learner will find out about the main components of an engine, the operating principles of the four-stroke spark ignition engine, and the function of gaskets, seals and locking devices.

  • Introduction to Engine Liquid Cooling and Engine Lubrication Systems
    Unit ref: A/501/7012

    Summary
    In this unit, learners will investigate the main components of liquid cooling and lubrication systems, and the reasons for each. They will learn about maintenance procedures and the precautions to be taken when working on each system.

Full time for one academic year (39 weeks total)

The assessments for this course combine various styles and methodologies. You will be assessed via observed practical demonstrations and a portfolio.

There are no formal qualification entry requirements.

The qualification is ideal for those learners, beginning their automotive education and who wish to undertake a qualification which will support their progress onto further learning.

Level 2 Award in Motor Vehicle Studies (Light Vehicle)

    Summary
    This unit enables the learner to develop knowledge of the inspection, adjustment and replacement of light vehicle braking systems.

  • Skills in Inspection and Replacement of Light Vehicle Braking Systems and Components
    Unit ref: L/601/6862

    Summary
    This unit will enable the learner to develop the skills required to carry out the inspection of light vehicle braking systems, as well as the replacement and adjustment of braking system components.

Successful completion of the Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle Studies

Functional Skills in English provides learners with essential knowledge and key skills that can be applied to everyday life from completing a job application to writing CVs and letters.
